What is MBSR? Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is one of the most rigorously researched mindfulness-based courses on offer. MBSR is an 8-week experiential, group-based programme and each session includes guided mindfulness meditations, movement practices and group discussion. Mindfulness invites us to find more ease in our daily lives by relating differently to our moment to moment experience. Many of us spend a lot of time in our heads, busy thinking, planning, ruminating on the past. Mindfulness invites us to literally come back to our senses, learning to pay more consistent and kind attention to our present moment experience. Through patience, repetition, a willingness to embrace the process and the support and guidance of an experienced teacher, this shift in our way of being can help us to relate more kindly to ourselves and others and connect more with the moments of joy in our lives. What are the benefits? According to the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University, the majority of people completing the programme report lasting physical and psychological benefits including: • an increased ability to relax • greater energy and enthusiasm for life • heightened self-confidence • an increased ability to cope more effectively What to expect during a session? We will meet on-line for 2 hours 15 minutes each week, for 8 sessions. Each session typically begins with a short, guided meditation, moving into a longer period of guided group meditation practice or mindful movement. There is also time in each session for facilitated group discussion where we explore the learning and challenges arising from our meditation practice. Each week we will also explore some theory around how our bodies and minds typically react to stress, anxiety and low mood and how we can learn to respond to this in new ways. The 8-week group programme includes an additional Orientation session and a half-day of silent guided practice in addition to the 8 evening sessions. What is expected between sessions Your home meditation practice is an integral part of the MBSR programme. You will be invited to commit to finding 30-45 minutes each day (or at least 6 days out of 7) to practice recordings of the meditations we do together in our session. If you are unable to make this commitment right now then maybe it is not a good time for you to attend an MBSR course. Feel free to contact Kate to talk more about what can work for you.
